Find your sailing board
Size the kit to the rider — do not copy a pro setup. Set weight and height, then pick your level: the table shows sail and board (230 or 180) for you.
Level
230 = longer freeride board, more volume, earlier planing — default for beginners. 180 = shorter, more turny — intermediate and pro once you plane. Pro level also sizes the sail a notch smaller. Match board + sail + boom to your weight and height.
Boom height
124–134cm
School rule: stand on the board with soft knees — boom about at shoulder height (a bit lower / chest for beginners). Not mast length: the mast holds the sail; the boom is what your hands hold.
Sail & board · 85 kg · beginner
| Wind m/s | Sail m² | Board | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–4 | 7.5–9 | 230 only | Pump only. Stay on 230 — 180 sinks and stalls. Beginners: technique on land if glassy. |
| 5–7 | 6.8–7.5 | 230 only | Light freeride if gusts hold. Beginner: 230 only. Intermediate: try 180 only in solid gusts. |
| 8–11 | 5.7–6.5 | 230 first | Stay on 230 until waterstarts and early planing feel calm. Move to 180 later. |
| 12–16 | 4.7–5.5 | 230 → 180 | If planing is solid, switch to 180 for control. If still learning — keep 230 + smaller sail. |
| 17+ | 3.7–4.7 | 180 / freestyle | Strong wind only if you want it. Short board + small sail. Skip if you are still learning waterstarts. |
When to go
- Best sessions: steady 8–14 m/s, gusts not more than ~30% above average.
- Skip or downsize: thunderstorms, lightning, offshore wind with no rescue, freezing rain.
- Light day (2–5 m/s): big sail + long board, or rest / technique on land.
- Always check water temp and local rules before you launch.

Session decision with Windy
I am freeride windsurfing. Rider 85 kg, height 181 cm. Boards: 230 and 180. Sails scaled for my weight. Spot now: Strogino (55.797, 37.430). Live now: wind — m/s, gusts — m/s, direction —, air —°C. I will also look at Windy (ECMWF + ICON, wind + gusts, next 6–12 hours) and Windfinder for this spot. Help me decide: 1) Is the session worth going out in the next 6 hours? 2) Which sail and which board should I take first, and what is the backup size if it builds or drops? 3) What should I watch for on Windy (gust factor, direction shift, rain/storm)? 4) Give a short go / maybe / no call with one-sentence reason.
Windy models vs live
Spot: Strogino (55.797, 37.430). Live Open-Meteo right now: — m/s, gusts — m/s, —. I am comparing Windy ECMWF vs ICON for the same point over the next 12 hours for freeride windsurfing (85 kg, height 181 cm). Please: 1) Explain how to read average wind vs gusts for sail choice. 2) Say what disagreement between ECMWF and ICON would mean for my session. 3) Tell me when I should trust the water/flags more than the model. 4) End with a practical checklist for the next hour before I leave home.

Assume I also open Windy and Windfinder before leaving. Return: 1) Primary sail + board. 2) Backup sail. 3) Clothing / water / safety notes for this air temp. 4) 5 questions I should answer from Windy/Windfinder before I drive to the spot.
